About the Artwork

The painting depicts a reclining female nude in an intimate domestic interior, surrounded by striped cushions, drapery, and soft furnishings. The figure dominates the composition, her body extending diagonally across the canvas and held against a shallow, enclosed background. This compressed space brings the viewer unusually close to the model and heightens the sense of physical presence. The artist models the body through broad transitions of flesh tone rather than sharply defined contour. Creams, ochres, rose, and cooler grey-green notes build the torso and limbs, while visible impasto gives the surface a tactile, almost sculptural quality. The handling remains loose and painterly, particularly in the surrounding fabrics, yet the figure retains a convincing sense of weight and anatomical structure. A useful comparison can be made with Hans von Marées’s The Rowers, particularly in the substantial modelling and physical gravity of the body. The work of Hermann Groeber offers an even closer parallel: his nudes similarly combine muted flesh tones, heavy sculptural modelling, and loose, impastoed brushwork. These comparisons are stylistic rather than attributive, but they help situate the painting within the broader figurative language of German and Central European painting in the first half of the twentieth century. The old Koblenz framing label further supports a connection with the German-speaking art market. Overall, the work balances academic command of the nude with a more modern interest in colour, surface, and painterly immediacy.
